The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) was informed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) about a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a dairy cattle herd, marking the first occurrence of such a case in Ohio’s livestock operations. This outbreak originated from cows received from a Texas dairy on March 8, 2024, which later tested positive for HPAI. Federal agencies, including USDA, FDA, CDC, along with state officials, are investigating this illness affecting dairy cows, characterized by reduced milk production and other symptoms. While the illness has spread to other states, efforts are ongoing to test animals and milk samples and to collaborate with veterinarians to prevent further spread. The FDA and CDC assure the safety of pasteurized dairy products, and ODA advises producers to implement biosecurity measures and avoid introducing cattle from risky areas. No livestock restrictions are in place currently, but ongoing assessments will inform future actions.
