Laurie Hueneke Martens, associate vice president of Global Public Policy and Government Relations at Merck Animal Health, has been recognized with the 8th Annual Feather in Her Cap Award for her leadership in public policy and dedication to mentoring women in the animal health and agriculture industries. The award, presented by the Feather in Her Cap Association, honors women who have made significant contributions to the field.
The award was presented at a ceremony attended by more than 325 industry leaders in Orlando, Florida. As part of the recognition, the association donated $5,000 to Hueneke Martens’ chosen animal-related charities, benefiting the Jackson County Iowa Humane Society and the Bellevue Iowa FFA Chapter.
A Leader in Public Policy and Trade
Hueneke Martens has played a key role in shaping international trade policies and advocating for science-based decision-making in animal health. Her work has been instrumental in removing trade barriers that stifle innovation and ensuring that groundbreaking developments in animal health reach those who need them. She has also led major industry coalitions and worked closely with legislative and regulatory policymakers.
Her leadership extends to high-profile roles in global trade and policy. She was recently appointed to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for trade in animals and animal products by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative. She currently chairs the International Trade and Standards Committee for the Animal Health Institute and has previously led HealthforAnimals and the Animal Health Institute’s Leadership Team.
One of her most notable achievements was developing global animal health trade principles aligned with World Trade Organization standards, reinforcing a science-driven approach to international trade. She also led the industry’s engagement with the U.N. Food Systems Summit and successfully spearheaded a global coalition to uphold science-based decisions within the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a key victory for maintaining fair global trade standards.
Mentorship and Advocacy for Women in Agriculture
Beyond policy work, Hueneke Martens has been a strong advocate for the mentorship and development of women in agriculture. She actively supports Merck Animal Health’s Women’s Network, providing career guidance and leadership opportunities for young professionals. She also works closely with Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture, Sigma Alpha agriculture sorority, and her local 4-H chapter.
