The governments of Canada and Manitoba have announced $4.7 million in grant funding through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) to support 36 research and innovation projects over the next three years. The funding, unveiled at CropConnect by federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn, aims to advance crop health and sustainability in the province.
Advancing Agricultural Innovation
The Research and Innovation Program is designed to develop science-based solutions and tools that address existing agricultural challenges, mitigate climate-related risks, and capitalize on emerging opportunities. By supporting research and capacity-building initiatives, the program fosters agricultural growth and sustainability, positioning Manitoba as a leader in sustainable agriculture research.
Funded Projects
The funding will support 36 projects across Manitoba, including:
- Manitoba Crop Alliance: Investigating the impact of crop residues on soil, water, carbon levels, and weed populations.
- University of Manitoba: Developing genomic selection models to enhance winter wheat breeding efficiency.
- Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers: Identifying soybean root rot resistance sources and evaluating inoculation strategies.
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Creating molecular markers to improve oat breeding and variety development.
Sustainable CAP: Strengthening Agricultural Competitiveness
The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial, and territorial governments to enhance the competitiveness, innovation, and resilience of the agriculture and agri-food sector. This includes $1 billion allocated to federal initiatives and a $2.5-billion cost-shared commitment (60% federal, 40% provincial-territorial) for programs designed and delivered by provinces and territories.
