Elanco Animal Health Advances Dairy Sustainability with Innovation and Advocacy

188

Elanco Animal Health is progressing in its livestock sustainability strategy, delivering innovations to farmers and advocating for a shift in the perception of cattle, from being seen as a climate challenge to being part of a sustainable solution. Through these efforts, Elanco aims to help producers reduce emissions while enhancing the environmental stewardship of their operations.

To reduce livestock’s environmental impact, Elanco has focused on expanding access to products that lower emissions. The recent FDA approval of combination clearances for Experior® and MGA® in beef production marks a step forward in reducing ammonia gas emissions. Experior is the first FDA-approved product with a claim to reduce ammonia emissions per pound of live weight and carcass weight for cattle in confinement. According to clinical studies, Experior can reduce ammonia emissions by up to 16% when fed at approved doses. This development offers producers flexibility and additional options for environmental stewardship.

Elanco’s efforts to reduce emissions extend to dairy production as well. Rumensin®, trusted for over 45 years, supports dairy and beef producers by enhancing feed efficiency, which reduces the overall natural resources required to feed livestock and subsequently lowers emission intensity. Rumensin’s effect on feed efficiency has also been shown to reduce methane emissions by approximately 10-15% in cattle, contributing significantly to Elanco’s sustainability impact.

In 2023, Elanco’s dairy and beef customers in the U.S. avoided an estimated 2.3 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) through the use of Rumensin, with cumulative reductions since 2020 reaching 9.5 million metric tons. This achievement is equivalent to removing over 2.2 million passenger cars from the road for a year, demonstrating the potential for livestock products to contribute to environmental goals.
