The THRIVE Global Impact Summit in Silicon Valley recently convened leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators from the agriculture and food technology sectors to discuss solutions for pressing climate challenges. Key topics included regenerative agriculture, clean energy, and strategies to mitigate climate change, with a spotlight on the dairy industry’s role in addressing methane emissions.

During a panel titled “Dairy’s Pivotal Role in Methane Mitigation,” experts explored how the dairy sector can reduce its environmental impact while maintaining productivity. Panelists included leaders from Alltech, Progressive Dairy Solutions, ABS Global, and Truterra LLC, with Dr. Frank Mitloehner, Director of the CLEAR Center at UC Davis, offering insights into the unique climate challenges posed by livestock.

Dr. Mitloehner emphasized that while livestock contributes to greenhouse gas emissions—primarily methane—the gas’s short lifespan presents an opportunity for agriculture to make meaningful reductions. He highlighted tools such as feed additives, genetic advancements, and manure management technologies that have already helped U.S. dairy farms increase efficiency while lowering emissions.

The discussion also showcased California’s leadership in methane reduction, particularly through the implementation of anaerobic digesters that convert manure into biogas for fuel. This incentive-driven approach has positioned the state’s dairy industry as a model for achieving sustainability goals without compromising economic viability.

Panelists further noted that innovation in dairy farming, such as improved genetics and nutrition, has enabled U.S. farms to produce more milk with fewer cows, reducing methane production per unit of output. These advancements underscore the potential for agriculture to be part of the solution to the climate crisis.

The Summit also previewed “A World Without Cows,” an upcoming documentary exploring how dairy farming can contribute positively to the environment. The film highlights the progress of U.S. dairies in adopting sustainable practices and offers a blueprint for reducing methane emissions globally.

As discussions concluded, panelists underscored the importance of collaborative, incentive-based approaches to achieving climate goals. They advocated for partnerships between regulators and farmers to drive meaningful progress, emphasizing that cooperation rather than conflict is key to success.
